Why We should Remain Optimistic About the Future of U.S.-China Relations
Although there remains a potential for structural conflict between China and the United States, I have consistently held a firm optimism about the future of relations between the two countries. From a long-term perspective, friction may be unavoidable, but it should not automatically be equated with conflict. Harvard University’s Professor Graham Allison has argued that current pessimistic expectations regarding U.S.-China relations under the Trump administration are “overly conspiratorial,” and that the real situation may turn out to be “much more optimistic than the outside world imagines” (caixinglobal.com). Such cautious optimism is precisely the rational interpretation we need.
